My Approach

I trust you and I trust your intuitions. When I enter your birth space, it is with respect, awe, and gentleness. Do not expect me to sweep in and “save the day”. I will not come in and take control. This is your birth and you are in control. To be on your birth team is an honor and a privilege, and the impact I might have in that moment is not something I take lightly.
With that in mind, know that I am 100% tuned in. I am listening intently to your breath, your moans, your words (I write this with a sigh because my hearing is not great, just to be totally transparent!). I am closely watching your movements, your rhythm, and looking for tension. Most of all, I am praying. It is in the birth room that I am most aware of John 15:5 “I Am the vine; you are the branches. The one who abides in Me and I in him produces much fruit, because you can do nothing without Me.” Every moment I lean on His wisdom to show me what you need. When I do feel the nudge, I will suggest a change, offer touch, or utter a sincere word of encouragement.
I often hear or read someone say “I couldn’t have done it without my doula!” I understand that this is an expression of speech and appreciate the meaning, but it is not my goal for my clients to feel this way. I want my clients to feel empowered after giving birth and think something like “I/we did this! It was so hard but I did it, and Jennifer was a valuable person on the team who encouraged and supported me well.” God made you to birth your baby and I would be honored to come alongside you to do what might be the hardest yet most beautiful thing you will ever do!
